A Tiny Butterfly

Now through the end of the month, in the Christina Reiman Butterfly Wing you’ll be able to view the Common Sergeant (Athyma periu), one of the tiniest butterflies available for shipping to butterfly displays such as Reiman Gardens’. Its wingspan is just 2 to 2 1/2 inches. But while tiny in size, it puts on a big display, with two-tone wings that can make it look like an entirely different butterfly, depending on its pose. The top of its wings are black and white; the bottom is primarily golden yellow and white. When spreading its wings, it looks like one butterfly. When lifting its wings upward, it looks like another.
