Sara Abbott – Kids in Nature

education intern with two cchildren

Hello! This is my eighth week here as an education intern! So far, this experience has been so much fun! Last week I had the chance to go to the Outdoor Learning Environment Conference, and was able to get a whole new perspective on kids learning in the natural world. It was really inspiring when considering a place like Reiman Gardens. I can see so much opportunity for kids to be immersed in gardening, horticulture and insects. While working in various programs, I’ve really started to enjoy more exploration based learning rather than structured classes. I feel that kids really get a lot out of choosing their own paths. Whether that means checking out some interesting insects, or watching the mother robins feed their babies. It’s really cool just letting the lesson flow with the kids. Also, when working with all ages it’s really fun watching various interactions. In a recent summer camp I was able to watch a few older students taking a leadership role and helping younger kids with crafts. I feel like I’ve already learned so much. I can’t wait to see what else the summer has in store!
