Matthew Hughes – Outdoor Horticulture Intern

Hello, I am Matthew Hughes and I am originally from Macon, MO. My major is Horticulture, with the option of Public Horticulture, which lends itself to working at a public garden, teaching, or in an extension office. I am one of the two outdoor horticulture interns this summer at Reiman Gardens. Working in the Gardens has been an amazing experience so far, and I can only look forward to the time left. It really lines up with what I want to do for a career, and prepares me for just that, a career.

I work with Ed Moran, and take care of the Herb Garden, rose gardens, and Campanile Garden. There are around 10-15 Iowa State students employed to keep things looking nice outside. We put plants out, water, mulch, weed, and deadhead flowers as needed. We also mow quite a bit, and take care of the many water features in the gardens.

If you see me in the Gardens, don’t hesitate to ask me a question. See you out there!
