Landscape and Garden Maintenance Intern’s Leadership Project

outdoors during summer with fruits and vegetables

As an intern we get to pick a summer long project to work on. For my project, I chose Plant-A-Row (PAR). PAR is an organization that takes fresh produce to local food pantries. As a Global Resource System student we focus a lot on food distribution and issues like food deserts, micronutrient deficiencies, and waste. So, I was really excited to work on a project that addressed those issues. At Reiman Gardens we have a garden dedicated to growing produce for PAR. This is one of my main responsibilities during the summer. I helped plant and have tended to the garden throughout the summer. I water, fertilize, weed, stake, harvest, and take care of any other needs that arise. We have a variety of fruits and vegetables growing in the garden including okra, watermelon, squash, corn, eggplant, tomatoes, beans, and many others. I’ve really enjoyed developing my horticulture skills and watching the garden grow throughout the summer. In addition to managing the PAR garden, I assist with other PAR related needs. On Mondays I help sort out produce so it can be distributed around Ames. I also collect leftover produce at the farmer’s market when needed. The volunteers I work with are so pleasant and I always appreciate their helpful tips! Working with Plant-A-Row has been a great experience!
