Volunteer Spotlight: Dave W.
Last year (before I even worked at Reiman Gardens), I attended an enchanting evening here for the Winter Wonderscape Light Show. I remember being mesmerized as I walked through tunnels that dripped with light and swirled with colors, taking the cutest family pictures at the little photo op location, and watching the winter decorations glitter off Lake Helen. I marveled about how much work goes into setting everything up–and now I know! From October 31-November 11, our horticulturist Sharon will work with a team of volunteer supervisors to build those tunnels, string lights, and set up decorations. We hope you’ll check Better Impact to join us! Today we spotlight Dave W., who is a relatively newer volunteer at Reiman Gardens, but has proven himself as dedicated and enthusiastic. Dave will be one of our volunteer supervisors during Winter Wonderscape installation, so if you volunteer, he might help you!
Dave W., volunteer since 2022
Why did you first decide to volunteer at Reiman Gardens?
I feel it import to give back to the community that you live in and was looking for something that I could do all year long.
Why did you continue to volunteer here?
Because I always have a good time when volunteering at Reiman and meet new people.
What types of volunteering did you try, and what were your favorite types of volunteering opportunities?
I have done pot washing, planting and weeding. I’ve also built some woodworking projects for Jessie.
What do you do for fun when you aren’t at Reiman Gardens?
For fun I love to travel, go camping with my grandchildren and do woodworking.
Volunteers are Reiman Gardens represent all walks of life, from middle school students helping with Plant a Row to long-retired members who can’t stay away. As an auxillary of Iowa State University, we are so appreciative of the students who spend time here and help develop our spaces into welcoming, beautiful, and educational areas for our entire community.
