From Soil to Sky: A Gardening Series for Beginners (FULL SERIES)

Various Saturdays*, February 19 through September 10, 9:30 AM – 12:00 PM

New to gardening? Learn it all from Reiman Gardens expert staff – from the basics of plant and soil science to simple and accessible gardening techniques, planning a garden for beauty and biodiversity, vegetable and ornamental gardening, selecting lawn alternatives, working with tropical plants, trees, houseplants, and more! Meets various Saturdays* and includes lecture-style presentations as well as hands-on workshops.  Register for the full series to receive high-quality gardening tools, seeds, plant starts, and containers at no additional cost thanks to granted funds from the Stanley Smith Horticultural Trust (a $250 value).

Preregistration with prepayment for the full series is required by Sunday, February 13. Limited to 20 participants age 13 and up. 

Sign up for individual classes, or register for the series to receive a discount, the full set of tools and materials, and a gardening certificate from Reiman Gardens.

Day of Insects: IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE

Saturday, March 26, 8:00 AM – 4:20 PM

Celebrate Reiman Gardens’ annual Day of Insects in a hybrid fashion for 2022. Enjoy a day filled with presentations from professionals, academics, advocates, and enthusiasts. From beginners to seasoned veterans, Day of Insects has something for anyone interested in or involved with insects.

A portion of presenters will be joining remotely, while others will present live from Reiman Gardens. There are a number of slots for people to attend in-person at Reiman Gardens, while others may attend completely remotely (see separate registration). On the day of the event, doors will open at 8:00 AM, with presentations starting at 9:00 AM and ending at 4:20 PM. We will not offer the workshop components or keynote events that are usually held the day before; we look forward to these elements coming back in 2023.

Preregistration and prepayment are required by March 17 for planning purposes. Masks covering nose and mouth are required for the in-person event.

Bonsai 101

This program has been postponed for another date TBD.
Beginning Saturday, April 2, 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM, for two weeks

Make tiny trees with expert instruction from the Iowa Bonsai Association! Attendees will learn the bonsai basics, different styles of bonsai, care practices and styling/wiring techniques. All attendees will leave with a styled bonsai tree.

Fairy Garden Family Workshop

Create your very own miniature garden for gnomes, fairies, or other nature sprites, using miniature plants, mosses and stones. Join Ellen Sattler for this fun, hands-on, family-friendly workshop where proper plants, planting & design techniques, care and maintenance will be shared. The fee includes pot, soil, moss, rocks, a small fanciful creature, and a selection of plants to get started. Then decorate your garden with tiny garden items such as benches, pots, stools, and other fanciful fairy items – available at an additional cost.

Learn the many benefits of growing vegetables, along with basic planning, and sourcing fruits & vegetables. Horticulturist Sharon Rink will cover site prep, new and traditional planting practices & techniques, garden maintenance, harvesting, and more! Attendees will receive various seeds and a sliding garden planner.

Join Creative Department artist Yvonne Brune for a 4-week course exploring the basics of landscape drawing, such as capturing perspective and drawing realistic trees, plants, and flowers. Sketch from the surrounding beauty of the Gardens and learn to compose a beautiful landscape drawing with tonal ranges in graphite and color.

Expressive lines or smoothly blended techniques offer a wide range of ways to paint with the versatile medium of pastels. In this 4-week course taught by central Iowa artist, Yvonne Brune, you'll work with oil pastels as well as soft pastels on a variety of papers that can add texture or color to your painting.
